End Date: May 11, 2025

Address: Alumnae Theatre, 70 Berkeley Street, Toronto

Events Description

Celebrating its eleventh year, the Alumnae Theatre’s FireWorks Festival champions women writers with the premieres of three wonderful full-length plays. This curated three-week festival is an incubator for new works and emerging artists, showcasing provocative writing and inventive staging.

  • Gunplay (after the gun goes off) by Jennifer Walton — April 23-27, 2025: When Darryl and his friend Niko get caught using a pellet gun in the alley beside an elementary school, it triggers a full active shooter response. Darryl and his mother Miranda feel the full force of justice, political, and education systems as well as the court of public opinion until Stevens, the police officer who was first on scene at the school and already suffering from PTSD, takes justice into his own hands.

  • Days Since Bo’s Been Gone by Miriam Sossin — April 30 – May 4, 2025: Days Since Bo’s Been Gone brings to the stage the raw and ridiculous world of grief. Jade is in her early twenties, starting her job at a small art gallery in Toronto, when her boyfriend Bo dies. Suddenly she must take on the responsibilities that come with death while trying to keep the other relationships in her life alive. One day at a time, fragmented and over the course of years, we witness Jade’s journey through imposter syndrome, impossible decisions, and the search for relief in this dramatic comedy.

  • The Green House by Krista Marushy — May 7-11, 2025: Susanne wades into uncertain terrain when she unravels a family mystery involving a daring escape, a foreboding dream, a sole survivor, and a trial by fire. Facing off against her formidable mother and a fiercely loyal sibling, she forces herself to navigate the fantastical story of her childhood. As inexplicable events come into focus, missing pieces align themselves to reveal a narrative she somehow missed the first time around. A bold new play about looking back to see who you’ve become and reexamining life’s most defining moments.

The Taste of Little Italy

The Taste of Little Italy

  • College St., between Bathurst and Shaw, Toronto (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

HISTORY

This vibrant neighbourhood, called little Italy – College street is the very first Little Italy in Toronto and an authentically unique neighbourhood that is incredibly rich in both character and culture. It all started when Italians first arrived in Toronto in large numbers in the early 20th century, and settled in an area known as “The Ward” – centred on university avenue, and college street. In the 1920s, most Italians moved west of Bathurst, and the College-Clinton area emerged as the City’s major Little Italy. The area experienced a significant influx in Italian settlement in the 1950s. Mostly working in construction or factory workers, some established small businesses along College – bakeries, fruit markets, meat markets, salons, tailor shops, barber shops. It wasn’t until they became more established that they started to venture into such businesses as cafes, restaurants, theatres and communications. Little Italy – College Street continues to be recognized and honoured for its historical contributions to the Italian community and to city life in multicultural Toronto. A visit to Little Italy will prove to be a unique experience, one that you won’t soon forget.

ABOUT US

In 1985, the Little Italy BIA was founded in the heart of College Street by a dedicated group of commercial and industrial property owners and tenants empowered by the municipality of Toronto. Over the years, this neighbourhood has developed, evolved, changed and matured. It had emerged as incredibly dynamic and distinctive area. It is renowned for its well known cafes, authentic restaurants, eclectic nightlife, European shops and distinctive services. Today, it continues to thrive under the direction of an engaged and empowered Board of Directors. A board that is vested in the area and volunteers their time and energy to making Little Italy a better place. Acting as a unified voice that represents the members on critical issues that affect the neighbourhood, the board remains committed to creating safe and vibrant place, while promoting the unique businesses and rich culture it is so well known for. BIA Boundaries: College Street from Bathurst Street to Shaw Street.

Events Description

Wavelength celebrates 25 years of musical independence with our Winter Festival 2025.

Featuring returning Wavelength staples and emerging underground talent, each night on this year’s lineup is stacked from head to toe, bringing together diverse underground music genres, from indie and punk to hip-hop and experimental.

We start things off on night one with an evening themed around hip-hop artist/activist pHoenix Pagliacci’s latest album Dichotomy. In addition to a performance from pHoenix, the rest of the lineup will feature sets by artists who guested on the album, including gothic post-punk drone sisters Bonnie Trash, raucous Afro-punk trio The OBGms, and DJ sets from everyone’s favorite “bedroom rapper”/Wavelength favourite Cadence Weapon. The evening will kick off with a cross-cultural improv collaboration from Gurpreet + Truss.

Friday night’s lineup (night two) will feature two floors of amazing guitar bands across a range of 21st century indie music styles. Upstairs will feature swoony dream-pop band Tallies, Montreal indie folk crooner Alex Nicol, and Toronto’s buzzy, jangly indie pop crew Ducks LTD. Downstairs features music from garage punk outlaws Priors, new wave tinged indie-pop project Essie Watts, and the return of Controller. Controller, a band whose infectious dance-punk sound left a mark on the 2000s. All-vinyl DJ sets from the always amazing SadStab.

And finally on night three, we conclude Winter Fest 2025 with two massive lineups both upstairs and downstairs. Upstairs will have music by Montreal shoegazers Bodywash, Anishnaabe indie-rock duo Ombiigizi, and the incomparable musical genius Owen Pallett. Downstairs will feature ambient songstress Erika Angell, funk, synth-pop superstar Jane Inc. and coming all the way from the UK, enchanting electro-pop artist Mui Zyu. DJ sets from queer dancefloor lovers Precious Jewel.

About this event

T.O. the Good Swap is a monthly clothing exchange for all genders, all bodies, and all ages. Love clothes and the planet? Then you'll love this event...

HOW IT WORKS

1. Drop

Stop at the welcome area with up to 10 items or 2 regular sized grocery bags of preloved clothing, footwear, jewelry, and accessories in good condition (a.k.a laundered and folded, no rips, stains, used undies or socks).

2. Swap

Find some thing(s) you love and try it/them on in the event space or washrooms.

3. Keep

Take what you want home with you. We ask that you to limit the amount you take home to a similar amount to what you brought. Remember: it's not about how much you get, it's about how much you'll wear it!

4. Share

Tag @the.good.swap to share your finds with the world. Sign up for our mailing list to find out when the next swap is!

Check out our FAQ page!

OUR MISSION

Eliminate textile waste in Toronto and champion ethical and sustainable fashion practices globally by encouraging participation in the conscious fashion movement through swap events, advocacy, and education.

Our mission differs from service organizations such as clothing banks which provide access to free or low-cost clothing for those in need of it. This list of clothing banks in Toronto may be useful if you are looking for these services.

WHY SWAP?

By swapping instead of shopping (or dumping your clothes at a thrift store), you’re participating in the circular economy, keeping clothing out of landfills, saving money, updating your wardrobe, avoiding unethical fast fashion and resource depletion, and sharing with a community of likeminded people… and sharing feels good.

All the sweet haul dopamine, none of the ethical dilemma!

Learn more about the fashion industry and how to care for clothing you truly no longer need on our Resources page.

COMMUNITY GUIDELINES

  1. Be nice to each other. Respect physical boundaries.

  2. Ten items or less. Please be respectful of our ten item limit!

  3. Check your items: no holes, no stains, missing parts, clean, and ready to be loved by someone new.

  4. Wash your items in scent-free soap and fold them before attending.

  5. Respect physical boundaries.

  6. Don’t hoard. Try things on as you go so others can check them out if you decide not to keep them.

  7. Don’t hover. Please keep the drop-off table clear and let volunteers place the items before looking through them.

  8. Don’t use the swap as a dumping ground. The end-of-life care of your textiles is your responsibility. You bought it, you bury it.*

  9. Don’t take to sell. Please take items that you or someone you personally know will wear.

  10. Don’t do stuff that makes us have to write any more community guidelines.

*Don't actually bury it. 85% of textile waste ends up in landfills each year.

Fine print: *We don’t take responsibility for garments donated and swapped and accept no liability for any claim or loss resulting from any transaction taking place at the event.*

Swap at your own risk: The swap is a high traffic event, and the opportunity for germs and pests to spread is elevated. We ask that swappers always wash their clothing in scent-free soap before a swap and only attend if they are in good health, but please be advised that we cannot guarantee the conditions of items at - or outcomes of - the swap. Take precautions: wear a face mask, use hand sanitizer, and wash your items when you get home!

Check out our FAQ page for more info.

About this event

  • Event lasts 4 hours

The Japanese Restaurant Association of Canada (JRAC) is proud to host the 2024 "Washoku Matsuri - Japanese Food Festival" at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre in Toronto, Ontario.

Washoku Matsuri will assemble some of the top Japanese chefs in Toronto to personally serve you authentic signature Japanese dishes that have captivated foodies and culinary experts alike. We have again partnered with one of Japan's legendary prefectures: EHIME. Ehime translates to "Lovely Princess". With its coastline protected by the Seto in-land sea, Ehime is famous for its superior quality seafood, delicious fruits and beverages that are of premium quality. The chefs of JRAC will showcase Ehime's beautiful and delicious natural bounty to all in attendance.

As part of the evening, you will also enjoy a fantastic line-up of premium Japanese sakes & beverages to pair with the unforgettable experience of amazing Japanese cuisine and traditional Japanese entertainment. JETRO (Japan External Trade Organization) will be promoting Japanese Whiskies (free sample tastings offered) and other Japanese foods. We will also have Nagata Shachu Toronto's famous Taiko Drumming & Music group to perform at the beginning of the dinner. In addition to the drink token(s) included in your ticket purchase, one can also purchase additional beverages from each vendor in the Shokokai Court (Drinks Reception) area.

Throughout the evening there will be cooking demonstrations featuring, "the Cutting of a Whole TUNA", introductions of key Japanese ingredients and spectacular cooking techniques. Expressing the connection between food and culture in Japan and health benefits of Washoku cuisine. Supporting these chefs as part of the JRAC fundraising efforts will deepen the understanding of authentic Japanese food and culture in Toronto, which supports new programs and educational seminars to culinary students and diners alike.

We look forward to welcoming you at the 2024 Washoku Matsuri!
