  • NewRoads Performing Arts Centre (map)

Friday, November 1, 2024 | 8 p.m.
NewRoads Performing Arts Centre (505 Pickering Crescent)
Tickets at Newtix.ca

The concept of BLACK GOLD is to illustrate in song the evolution of Motown music in 1963 hits to the mid 80s Pop hits of mega star entertainers. The early Motown songs are upbeat hand-clapping tunes about romance, love, friendship and that's what the show is all about: joy, hope, uplifting entertainment. The later numbers are love songs and about happier times. The musicality of some of the songs are uncomplicated but have meaningful lyrics. Perhaps that's why they became classic hits in a golden age of music. The underlying theme of the show is about coming together, loving one another, and helping make the world a better place.

This talent-packed show features six highly skilled vocalists and a stalwart band of five musicians performing the golden hits of The Drifters, Martha and the Vandellas, The four Tops,The Temptations, Donna Summer, The Supremes, Lionel Ritchie, Aretha Franklin, Barry White, Tina Turner Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and others.  Learn more about Black Gold here.

    • 2 to 4 p.m.

    • Blue Silver Farm Woodbine Avenue

As part of our commitment to reconciliation, each year Pickering College features a "Storytime Trail" where children and adults can walk from sign to sign and enjoy a book by an Indigenous author. This year the trail will be located at our school farm at 17019 Woodbine Avenue.

This year's trail features Sometimes I Feel Like an Oak written by award winning author Danielle Daniel with illustrations by Ojibway artist Jackie Traverse. Sometimes I Feel Like an Oak reflects the nature and beauty of trees through twelve lyrical poems that portray children connecting with different trees across the seasons. Each poem invites readers to look anew at the trees around them and understand their deeper meanings, reflecting Danielle Daniel's belief in the sentience and teachings of trees, a view shared by her Algonquin ancestors.

At the end of the Story Walk visitors will be able to learn more about "Little Forests" as community volunteers and students will be in the process of planting a regenerative area. Volunteers and experts in sustainable forestry will explain how the plants will work together to regenerate the land many times faster than typical planting.

Visitors are invited to park along Woodbine Avenue and look for the blue welcome banners. Student guides will greet you as you begin your visit. Saturday, September 28 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. This event is outdoors, please dress accordingly.

About the Artist:

Brian John Harwood was raised in a small town within Ontario, Canada and grew up surrounded by the great outdoors, the love of family and of course, Country music. These were the pillars that built Brian's life and career in the music industry. At age 11, Brian picked up his first guitar and knew at that moment he was going to be a performer. It was in his blood. With his very artistic side, Brian brings creative life to his song writing as an artist. The stories that inspire Brian's songs come from his heart and personal life form and most importantly, his family and friends.

Its been a busy few years for Brian as his career has been taking off. Brian has opened for acts like Zac Brown Band, Brothers Osborn, Tebey, Josh Ross, Cooper Alan, among many others. This year, Brian will be performing at many prestigious concerts including Boots and Hearts, Sunfest, and Boots 'n Boats all while joining country greats like Keith Urban, Lee Brice, Jason Blaine, Cole Swindell, Jason Aldean and Carly Pearce just to name a few.

In a short period of time, Brian has accumulated over 4 million streams across various music platforms, climbed the radio charts on several occasions, hit top 40 on Australian Country music charts and has multiple top 100 singles on Canadian Country airplay charts. Brian was also the featured cover artist for Apple Music's country playlist in 2023.

Brian continues to shine bright in the lime light of Country Music and 2024 is going to showcase BJH music in a way no one has seen before. Brian brings an incredible up beat stage performance to all his shows and is always working to raise the bar higher. This is the year of BJH and you don't want to miss out. Splash of Culture presented by Mercedes-Benz Newmarket

Thursday, August 29, 2024 | 8 p.m.
Newmarket Riverwalk Commons (200 Doug Duncan Drive)

Join us for an evening of musical performances by very talented artists in a unique setting as we transform the Mercedes-Benz Newmarket Skating and Water Feature into a beautifully lit stage complete with a baby grand piano. Be sure to complete your summer with this memorable event.

This year's event will feature musical artists:

The Blackburn Brothers

  • An obvious uniqueness that identifies and sets apart Blackburn Brothers is that they are a band of brothers. Led by Duane (lead vocals, organ, piano), Brooke (guitar, vocals, writing), and Cory (drums, harmony vocals). Oldest brother Robert (guitar, vocal harmonies, writing) and cousin Nathan (bass guitar) can be heard on recent studio recordings. Longtime horn section bandmates include Neil Brathwaite on tenor saxophone and Ted Peters on trombone. Touring bass guitarist is Andrew Stewart. The brothers musical lineage traces back to R&B legend Bobby Dean Blackburn, whose legacy in the Toronto music scene spans over six decades.

Beyond the music, other history runs deep. The Blackburn Brothers are 4th-generation Canadians, descended of freedom seekers through the Underground Railroad and settling in Southern Ontario. The Blues that the Blackburn Brothers create is part of their inheritance, and always about a message of history, freedom, legacy, family, Black unity, and love. The SoulFunkn’Blues album is a tribute to all the trailblazers, all of the ancestors and forgotten tribes who taught the Blackburn Brothers the importance of history, blues, soul, groove, rhythm and life. It is a tribute to 230 years of Canadian Roots and Blues.

Blackburn Brothers have graced stages alongside an illustrious lineup of globally renowned icons, from the legendary Mavis Staples and Dr. John and The Nite Trippers to the electrifying talents of Christone "Kingfish" Ingram and Cedric Burnside. Additionally, they've shared the spotlight with esteemed Canadian artists such as Sarah McLachlan, Colin James, The Bros. Landreth, among others. These collaborations highlight their versatility and appeal across different genres and audiences. They have performed at many of the largest blues, jazz, and folk music festivals across North American and in Central America.

The Blackburn Brother’s latest album SoulFunkn'BLUES (Sep 2023) has garnered international acclaim, with reviews and features in several prominent music publications. Additionally, the album has received three American 2024 Blues Music Awards nominations for Album of The Year, Soul Blues Album of The Year, and Song of The Year (a new precedent from a Canadian band), and a 2024 JUNO Awards nomination for Blues Album of The Year. Considered the highest honours on the Canadian Blues scene, Blackburn Brothers collectively earned a record-setting nine nominations in the 2024 Maple Blues Awards including: Entertainer of the Year and Electric Act of the Year.

  • Colin Maier (oboe, saw, vocals, from Quartetto Gelato) & Mark Camilleri (pianist and music director for The Tenors) are "Joyride", an all-out "music party" where they play their favorites based in Latin jazz, pop jazz, ragtime, klezmer and bebop, as well as Celtic, folk and tango. These two players can go out on a limb improvising and composing on the spot, taking the audience along with them on their musical adventures. JoyRide has performed far and wide: in Toronto, Cornwall, Deep River and Ancaster, and at the First Ontario Performing Arts Centre, the Collingwood Festival, the Lowville Festival, the Westdale Theatre in Hamilton, the Burlington Performing Arts Centre, and at the State University of New York at Fredonia. JoyRide's recently released self-named CD has received radio play on jazz stations around the world, with reviews coming in from as far away as Spain, Denmark, the UK, and all across North America. The New York Music Daily says "Ridiculous, virtuosic, outside-the-box fun from JoyRide… It takes a lot of nerve to make music as amusing as JoyRide's."

"The audience was enthralled and dizzy with these supermen of music!" (Eden Mills Music Club audience member)

Colin Maier is an oboist and multi-instrumentalist who is also a dancer, actor, stuntman, singer, martial artist and Cirque de Soleil acrobat. Originally from Calgary, he has performed with orchestras across Canada and been seen in shows such as Lord of the Rings, Amadeus, Cats, A Chorus Line, and Sarah Brightman's World Tour. During the Vancouver 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Opening Ceremonies, he was featured as the Devil Fiddler in the Flying Blue Canoe. Since 2009, he has travelled the world, performing as a member of Quartetto Gelato. www.colinmaier.com

Pianist, composer, arranger and producer Mark Camilleri is the music director for The Tenors and director/producer of hundreds of theatre and musical productions in Canada. He has worked with some of show business's biggest names, such as Il Divo, Celine Dion, Sting, Eric Clapton, Herbie Hancock, Jim Cuddy and many more, and has produced award-winning CD's for Jeff Healey, The Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Alan Thicke, and others. https://www.imaginesoundstudios.com
